Early recognition and treatment of sepsis in children is crucial as progression to organ failure and shock is often very rapid.

The relative incidence and mortality of shock varies greatly depending on the population and the cause.

Sometimes as a doctor it can feel as though everyone has 'sepsis' and the term is often bandied about.
