General Management Principles

Bell’s palsy can only be diagnosed when there is peripheral facial muscle weakness in the absence of an apparent cause. If any alternative features/causes have been identified, management should be directed there.

Management of facial nerve palsy can be divided into:

• Treatment directed at the cause of the facial nerve palsy
• Treatment of the consequences of the facial nerve palsy
