The known risk factors for dementia include:
- Age
- Female gender
- Excess alcohol intake
- Head injury causing loss of consciousness at some point in the patient’s past
- Depression
- Learning difficulties
- Diabetes
- Obesity
- Hypertension
- Hypercholesterolaemia
- Smoking
