An abdominal radiograph can be performed in three views:
The routine view is the AP supine (Fig 1)
The left lateral decubitus is used occasionally to demonstrate pneumoperitoneum in those too ill to sit/stand for an erect chest film (Fig 2)
The erect view was previously used to show air/fluid levels in the bowel. However, these are not diagnostic of obstruction and it is rarely of additional help to the supine film with or without an erect chest film (Fig 3)
