Diaphragm Injury

A diaphragmatic injury is uncommon but suspect it if the patient has suffered a high energy transfer or crush injury.

On which side does it occur more frequently?

A diaphragm injury occurs more frequently on the left side. The x-ray shows a diaphragm rupture.

What signs are there to denote a diaphragm injury?

An elevated left hemi diaphragm, stomach or bowel in the chest, a haemothorax and abnormal position of a nasogastric tube are all signs of a diaphragm injury. The x-ray demonstrates bowel loops herniated into the left chest – arrows.
