Retropharyngeal Infection

CT is the imaging modality of choice and is preferred to plain film (soft tissue neck view). Plain film may show air in the retropharyngeal tissues (as shown by the arrows below) or prevertebral soft tissue swelling. While plain film is helpful it is not sensitive enough to rule out retropharyngeal infection [14,15].
