Abbreviated Mental State Test Assessment
What questions are asked when carrying out the abbreviated mental test?
The following questions should be asked:
- What is your age?
- What is your date of birth?
- What year is it?
- What time of day is it?
- What address/place are we in?
- Register a three line address and recall at the end of the test
- Who is the King or Queen?
- What year was World War 1?
- Count backwards from 20 to 1
- Identify two people (names/jobs)
Learning Bite
The patient should score one mark for each answer that is completely correct. For question 8, the first or last year of World War 1 is taken to be correct. For question 9, patients can score one mark if they make no mistakes or if they correct themselves spontaneously.
