The patient attends acutely following a fall and complains of pain in her right hip. The x-ray is passed as normal (click on the x-ray to enlarge).

If the x-ray is thought to be normal, there are two possibilities. Most likely is that the x-ray is normal but it’s possible that there is a fracture that has been missed. If the clinical features suggest a fracture but the x-ray appears normal, it’s important that the x-ray is re-examined. Consider obtaining a second opinion. A radiologist confirms that there is no bony injury.
