Meningitis – Further considerations

Viral meningitis- will present in a similar fashion to bacterial meningitis, but may be less pronounced.

-Causative organisms- coxsackie, echovirus, mumps, measles, herpes simplex, poliomyelitis, varicella zoster.

-Prognosis is usually better than bacterial meningitis.

-Treatment is usually symptomatic

Fungal meningitis- is rare, usually seen in immunocompromised patients.

The role of steroids- Latest Cochrane review (2015) concluded no change in mortality and Corticosteroids decreased the rate of hearing loss in children with meningitis due to H. influenzae (4% versus 12%), but not in children with meningitis due to other bacteria.
