Meningitis in the infant

Again symptoms may be non-specific and signs/symptoms of meningeal irritation may be absent.

Signs and Symptoms- as for neonates, plus neck stiffness and photophobia may also be elicited

– Petechiae and purpura are a sign of meningococcal infection, but may also be seen in Hibs and viral infections.

Causative Organisms

– Group B Streptococcus

– E.Coli

– Haemophilus Influenza

– Streptococcus pneumoniae

Treatment – Refer to local protocol, but usually

– Amoxicillin 30mg/kg + 3rd Generation Cephalosporin (e.g. Cefotaxime 50mg/kg
