An 11-year-old previously well boy presented 2 days after sustaining a twisting inversion injury to his right ankle while running down hill on grassy ground.

He had marked swelling and pain at the lateral malleolus and the lateral aspect of the anterior ankle joint line; and was unable to weight bear. His sensation and circulation were otherwise normal.

Oral analgesia was administered and he was sent for an x ray of his right ankle joint. The images of which are below.
