Pitfalls

Managing the anticoagulated bleeding patient can be difficult and is associated with very high morbidity and mortality. Successful management of such patients requires preparation, aggressive management, early discussion with a haematologist and prompt treatment.

Monitoring remains an issue in the management of bleeding patients on direct anticoagulants.

Currently there are no antidotes available for factor Xa inhibitors and there is limited evidence for available options.
