Not an exhaustive list, but some of the things that will get you through the first few weeks! Enjoy!
- Trollies – make sure you know how to raise/lower the head end and how to tilt them
- Practice putting brakes on and off and check if there’s a steer setting
- Emergency buzzers – where are they, how do you pull them, what do they sound like and how do you know where to go if you hear one?
- PPE – where do you find it? What do you need to wear and when? How do you don/doff?
- Oxygen masks – where are they? Make sure you know how to attach one, including how to inflate the bag first on a non-rebreathe mask
- Suction – if you had to suction in a hurry, where would you find it? Do you know how to do it? The resus training department should be able to help
- Crash trolley – where’s the nearest crash trolley, or are patients taken to resus?
- Emergency drug box
- Bag-valve-mask – is the nearest one in the cubicle, on the crash trolley or in resus?
- Defib – where are they and how do they work? Resus training can help you – don’t assume it’ll be like in your last job, as lots of areas use different brands
- Resus algorithms – are they on the wall? Do you have an app?
- Monitors – how do you turn them on? How do you get a set of obs yourself if you need to?
- Fluids – if you needed to set up a fluid drip in a hurry, could you?
- Blood gases – make sure you’ve had training in the type of machine in your new department
- Gauze – bleeding wounds, bleeding cannulas – where is the nearest stash of gauze??
- Bleep system – how do you use it? How do you find numbers for common calls such as the med reg, ICU reg, critical care outreach?
- ReSPECT forms/DNACPR forms – what does your new department use? How do you fill one in?
- Trust clinical guidelines – don’t learn them all by heart, but where do you find out how to treat hyperkalaemia, DKA, ACS, CVA, etc?
- X-ray, CT, MRI, ultrasound – where are these departments? Worth knowing how to find a radiologist if you need one too
- Coffee room – and check if there’s a kitty to contribute to
- Canteen
- Water fountain
- Toilets – where are the staff toilets and how do you direct patients to the toilet? Also worth knowing where to find a urine bottle and how to help change a bed pan #oneteam!
- Sickness – how do you call in sick if you need to?
- Support – who do you speak to you if you’re struggling? Either clinically on the shop floor, or in general?

Make sure you complete by going through all questions in an exam!This is a great example!
