A 28-year-old female presents to the emergency department with a 3-day history of a red, painful and watery right eye. She doesn’t wear contact lenses and there is no history of trauma. She has no significant past ocular or medical history.

Visual acuity assessment is completed using a Snellen chart – right eye visual acuity is 6/12 and left eye visual acuity is 6/6. On examination of the right eye, the conjunctiva is hyperaemic, the cornea is clear, and an irregular pupil is noted. Left eye examination and fundoscopy is tolerated and is unremarkable.
