A 73-year-old male presents to the emergency department (ED) with 1 hour history of sudden, painless vision loss in the left eye. He denies any other symptoms.
He has a background of insulin dependent type 2 diabetes, ischaemic heart disease, hypertension and dyslipidaemia, which he is taking multiple medications for.
On assessment, left visual acuity consists of hand motion only compared to 6/6 vision on the right and both pupils will equal and reactive to light. Dilated fundus images can be seen in Figure 1 below.
